Jason's Story

Jason McDermott started volunteering at PEEK in May 2012 and throughout that time Jason supported Funclubs, Streetplay and youth sessions, as well as helping out at holiday clubs and working as a finance intern. Jason also took part in two peer education projects. In the first project ‘Be..!!’ Jason explored, devised and facilitated at the showcase to professionals in the field of mental health and a group of twelve of his peers. The second project entitled Two Sides Two Stories was a theatrical piece which explored gang violence and child soldiers. Throughout this years at PEEK, Jason also secured funding through Youthbank to complete a Christmas ice skating with the youth as well as getting money to buy a volunteer IPad. Jason also won a position to start up his own social enterprise with Firstport and Ice-cream Architecture. In terms of taking the lead, Jason planned and delivered a session at the Young Volunteer Residential and he also completed his Silver and Gold Youth Achievement awards. It’s because of his commitment and dedication to Volunteering at PEEK that Jason was awarded the Tommy Healy Award for Volunteering in 2013. He was also a winner of the Young Group Award at the North East Evening Times Community Champions Award. Since then Jason has gone on to begin sessional work with PEEK, supporting Funclubs and office admin.
